Social Security Disability: Epilepsy (Seizures)

Epilepsy, and seizures in general, is something I see fairly often in my practice as a Social Security Disability lawyer. Many people suffer seizures in addition to other symptoms and impairments, while some are applying for Social Security Disability due to seizures alone. For people dealing with seizures, there are many different factors to consider when looking at your case for a Disability claim. For example:

How often do you have seizures?

How long do the seizures last?

What happens when you have a seizure?

Do you lose consciousness during a seizure?

How do you feel after your seizure?

These are not all the questions, but certainly a few Social Security will want to know for your claim. One important thing is to make sure you are seeing doctors regularly for your seizures. Social Security needs evidence that these seizures are happening as often and as severely as you claim. Many people tell me they don’t need to go to the doctor every time they have a seizure. While I understand this, not having documented records from a physician regarding your seizures makes the case that much more difficult. Social Security needs to determine how many much work you would miss because of your seizures. To learn more about whether your seizures may qualify you for Social Security Disability, you should contact Social Security or a Disability attorney as soon as you can.
